Former Barcelona sporting director Jordi Cruyff revealed that the club dreamt of signing Erling Haaland before his move to Manchester City. However, the €180m-rated striker was financially out of reach. Barcelona instead signed Robert Lewandowski, who has since scored 101 goals in 147 games and remains their key striker under Hansi Flick.
Stealing the spotlight in a recent interview, former Barcelona sporting director Jordi Cruyff revealed that the club once dreamed of signing Erling Haaland, a move that ultimately proved impossible. During his time at Barcelona, Cruyff worked with Mateu Alemany to rebuild the squad with a focus on attacking football and financial stability. He admitted that Haaland, who was still at Borussia Dortmund at the time, was seen as a “dream” signing as someone who could send a strong message that Barcelona were back among Europe’s elite.
However, the financial demands made it unfeasible. Instead, Barcelona opted for Robert Lewandowski, a more realistic option with a proven track record. Since joining the Catalan club from Bayern Munich, Lewandowski has scored an impressive 101 goals in 147 matches and continues to be Hansi Flick’s top striker. At 36, he’s entering his final contracted season.
Meanwhile, Haaland has thrived at Manchester City, living up to his €180 million valuation with consistent performances and goal-scoring feats. Though Barcelona never managed to land him, Cruyff’s comments highlight how big a role finances and timing play in modern football and leave the door open for future surprises, perhaps even Haaland in a Barcelona shirt one day.
