‌Indian leg spinner Rahul Chahar showed his class in the 14th round of the County Championship game against Hampshire. The 26-year-old finished with overall figures of 10/118 at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Southampton.

Chahar was representing the Surrey County Cricket Club, which was led by English opener Rory Burns. The first innings of the match was disappointing for the Brown caps, who were bowled out for 147, and Hampshire managed to get a 101-run lead as they ended the innings on a score of 248. Though Chahar managed to get a couple of wickets in the innings, he had a slightly expensive outing with an economy of 3.24. While it seemed like the game was going Hampshire's way, a half-century from Ralphie Albert and three 40-run cameos from Burns, Dom Sibley, Ben Foakes, and Dan Lawrence ensured that their team got a sliver of hope and gave Hampshire a target of 181.

There was a moment in the game where Hampshire was running away with the game, with the openers putting on 61 runs for the first wicket. However, Chahar singlehandedly took the game away from them and ended with figures of 8/51 in the second innings. With Chahar’s eight-wicket haul and Lawrence contributing with a couple of wickets, Hampshire were bowled out for 160, and Surrey won the game by 20 runs.

While Chahar was one of the stars for Surrey in the game, Hampshire also featured a talented Indian player in Washington Sundar, who also had a good outing in the match. The all-rounder from Tamil Nadu took three wickets and scored 56 runs in the first innings to help his team gain a healthy first innings lead. Though it came in a losing cause, this performance will also give him a lot of confidence ahead of the two-match Test series against the West Indies.
