South Africa beat Australia in the first ODI at the Cazaly’s Stadium by 98 runs on Tuesday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. While Aussie skipper Mitchell Marsh’s efforts go in vain, Keshava Maharaj stole the show with his first five-wicket haul in 50-over cricket.

‌Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first, and it seemed like they had an early grasp on the game with some disciplined bowling from Josh Hazlewood and Ben Dwarshuis at the start. However, Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton survived through the tough period and made up for their slow start, and ended the powerplay strongly with the score reading 56/0. The duo was moving along strongly until Travis Head broke the 92-run stand with the wicket of Rickelton. The left-handed batter was dismissed while attempting a slash through covers, but ended up finding the safe hands of Marnus Labuschagne, who took a sharp low catch. Despite the wicket, Markram was still looking good at the crease until he was dismissed on 82 by Dwarshuis in the 24th over. Though that wicket came as a surprise The Proteas were still in a solid position at the halfway stage at 133/2 at the halfway stage. After Markram, Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma (65 off 74) and Matthew Breetzke (57 off 56) took the innings forward with a brilliant third-wicket stand. However, the Aussies managed to come back in the game as soon as the partnership was broken. Travis Head was the star with the ball who took the crucial breakthroughs and ended up being the pick of the Aussie bowlers as he finished with figures of 4/57 in his nine overs and also contributed with a freak run-out of Prenalan Subrayen. While it seemed like Aussies could still restrict them to a below-par score, a cameo by Wiaan Mulder made sure they reached a competitive total of 296/8 in the end.
The Australian innings started strongly with Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh putting on 60 for the opening stand until Subrayen got his revenge on Head in the eighth over of the game. The power play ended on a sour note as Labuschagne was dismissed by beauty by Keshav Maharaj in the ninth over, and only three runs came in the next three overs, taking them to a score of 63/2 after 10 overs. Straight after the power play came a collapse as Maharaj continued to chip in with the wickets and ended up achieving his first five-wicket haul in the format. The Aussies from 60/0 were suddenly brought down to 89/6. It seemed like the game was done and dusted for the Aussies, but their skipper kept the game alive with his knock of 88 off 96 deliveries. While these efforts were applauded, it was not enough to get the team over the line, as they were bundled out for 198 and won the game by a huge margin of 98 runs.
