Getting run out at the non-strikers' end is one of the rarest and most unfortunate dismissals in the game of cricket. One such dismissal was witnessed in the first ODI between Australia and South Africa as Travis Head produced a freak run-out to stun Prenalan Subrayen at the other end.

‌The first ODI  between Australia and South Africa might have been dominated by the batters with some great batting performances by Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and Matthew Breetzke who ensured the the Proteas reached a competitive total of 296/8 in the end. While most of the Aussie bowlers struggled to get wickets, part-time spinner Travis Head had a great outing with the ball where he finished with figures of 4/57 in his nine overs. It was one of those days for the top-order batter where everything he touched turned into gold. One such freakish and golden moment was witnessed in the 49th over of the African innings.

This was the penultimate over of the game, and Travis Head had already taken the wicket of Keshav Maharaj on the third delivery. However, it was the freak run-out on the last ball of the over that caught everyone’s attention. Head bowled, tossed the ball up to Wiann Mulder, who danced down the track and smashed it straight to the bowler. The ball ended up ricocheting off his hand and crashed into the stumps, only to find Prenalan Subrayen out of his crease at the non-strikers' end. Though this was a moment of luck for Head, it was misfortune for Subrayen, who was playing his first match in ODI cricket.
