Hansi Flick Backs Yamal After Ballon dOr Setback

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said Lamine Yamal’s Ballon d’Or disappointment will motivate him further after finishing second to PSG’s Ousmane Dembele, though he claimed the Kopa Trophy. Yamal, who helped Barcelona secure a domestic treble last season, will miss the Oviedo clash with a groin issue, while midfielder Gavi faces 4–5 months out after knee surgery.
In the build-up to Barcelona’s La Liga clash against Real Oviedo, coach Hansi Flick spoke about young star Lamine Yamal’s response to missing out on the 2025 Ballon d’Or. The 18-year-old winger finished second to Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele but claimed the Kopa Trophy for best young player. Flick said Yamal has taken the setback positively and will use it as motivation to aim higher in the coming seasons.
He highlighted Barcelona’s strong presence in the award rankings as proof of the team’s progress. Yamal, who played a vital role in Barcelona’s domestic treble last season, is sidelined with a groin injury and will miss Thursday’s game. Despite his absence, Flick insisted that every starting XI he picks has the quality to win matches. The coach also addressed the long-term injury of midfielder Gavi, who will miss four to five months after undergoing knee surgery.
The 21-year-old had previously missed almost a year with a ligament tear in 2023. Flick praised Gavi’s commitment and assured the club will support his recovery to full strength. Currently, Real Madrid leads La Liga by five points after beating Levante 4-1, while Barcelona aims to maintain pressure on their arch-rivals in the title race.
