Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was sent off just five minutes into their Premier League clash with Manchester United, forcing a reshuffle. With Sanchez suspended only for the upcoming Carabao Cup tie, Chelsea could reignite their interest in AC Milan’s Mike Maignan, whose contract expires next year. The 30-year-old French goalkeeper could join the Blues on a free transfer.
For the Blues, the Premier League clash against Manchester United turned chaotic when Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez received a red card just five minutes into the game for a foul on Bryan Mbeumo outside the box. Despite a VAR review, the decision stood, forcing manager Enzo Maresca to make early changes, including bringing Filip Jorgensen into goal and Tosin Adarabioyo to strengthen the defense. Chelsea struggled to contain United, with Bruno Fernandes scoring less than ten minutes after the sending off.
The incident has reignited Chelsea’s interest in AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. The club had previously shown interest in June, but Milan valued the French international at £25million, and Chelsea appeared content with Sanchez and Jorgensen. Maignan’s contract at San Siro expires next year, allowing him to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs from January.
Chelsea could secure him on a free transfer at the end of the season, giving them a long-term solution in goal. Maresca reportedly sees Maignan as a perfect tactical fit. Maignan had considered leaving Milan this summer, but the appointment of Massimiliano Allegri and the promise of captaincy persuaded him to stay. However, no new contract has been finalized, leaving the door open for Chelsea to revive their pursuit of the 30-year-old.
