Pep Guardiola has expanded Manchester City’s leadership group to four, naming Bernardo Silva as captain alongside Ruben Dias, Rodri, and Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker, who signed a contract until 2034, impressed with maturity and leadership in the Manchester derby, scoring twice and defending strongly. Guardiola views Haaland as a future captain due to his long-term commitment.
In the summer of 2025, Pep Guardiola reshaped Manchester City’s leadership group, naming Bernardo Silva as captain and including Ruben Dias, Rodri and Erling Haaland as senior figures. Haaland’s addition came after he signed a nine-and-a-half-year contract in January, committing his future to the club until 2034. Guardiola explained that the striker’s growing maturity and natural influence since his 2022 move from Borussia Dortmund made him a clear candidate for a leadership role.
The Norwegian forward has already demonstrated those qualities, most notably in the recent derby against Manchester United where he not only scored twice but also contributed defensively by clearing dangerous crosses. Guardiola suggested Haaland could eventually succeed Silva as captain, especially with Silva’s contract set to expire at the end of this season.
The decision reflects Guardiola’s belief that leadership should emerge from consistent performances and presence on the pitch. By placing Haaland in the leadership core, City have underlined his importance not just as a goalscorer but also as a long-term figurehead who can inspire teammates and shape the culture of the dressing room for years to come.
