SA vs WA, Preview | Western Australia looking to avenge last season’s home defeat against Southeners

The Sixth game of the Australia One Day Cup is set to take place at the Keren Rolton Oval in Adelaide on 24 September. A great battle between the defending champions and the most successful team in the tournament is on the cards with both teams going into the game after losing their opening games.

The Australia One Day Cup has begun, and it is time for one of the most iconic clashes of the tournament as defending champions South Australia will be going up against 17-time One Day cup champions Western Australia. Western Australia were the most dominant side in the tournament in the last five years and had won three titles in a row before having one of their worst seasons in the last tournament. On the other hand, South Australia, who have been struggling to get their hands on the trophy in the last 13 years, finally ended their drought by winning their fourth title in the same season.
Both teams in the ongoing season have played one game in the tournament, in which South Australia suffered a 131-run loss against New South Wales, who completely outplayed them in Cricket Central in Sydney. The only silver lining for the Alex Carey-led side in the game was the half-century by Mackenzie Harvey. Western Australia, on the other hand, lost a high-scoring thriller in Brisbane against Queensland. Despite the amazing century by Joel Curtis at the top to get them to a 300+ score, they failed to defend the total as their opponents finished the game with five balls to spare.
Other than coming on the back of disappointing losses in their first game, the Western franchise will also be looking to avenge their losses to the Southerners, in the last two games they have featured in. The last game saw them fail to chase down a modest score of 208 at their home ground at the WACA. With Southern Australia playing the game in Adelaide, this will be the perfect opportunity to give them a taste of their own medicine.
Form Guide
The defending champions, having won the title after beating Victoria by a 64-run margin in the tournament, were expected to perform as the favorites. However, they did not start their title defense with a massive loss against New South Wales. Despite the loss, their recent form in the tournament has still been decent, having won three of their last five game.
Western Australia went into the tournament after an abysmal last season, where they finished at the bottom of the table, having only won two of their seven games in the 2024/25 season. Though they showed a lot of promise in the game, it was not enough to improve their recent form in the tournament, having only won a solitray game in their last five encounters.

South Australia vs Western Australia Head-to-Head in 50-over cricket
The two teams have had some great battles since the beginning of the tournament in 1969. Though South Australia might have won the last two encounters, it is Western Australia who hold the lead in the last five games featuring the two teams.

Pitch and Weather
The Karen Rolton Oval has only hosted one 50-over game between Australia Women and New Zealand Women in 2019 so far and this will be the first time the venue will host a game in the Australian domestic One day Cup. Since the players will not be knowing the conditions that well, it will be a challenging decision for the skippers on what to choose after winning the toss.
The conditions are expected to be overcast and cloudy in Adelaide and with the probable temperature ranging from 14-16 degrees Celsius. However, there should be no threat of rain as the clouds might clear out eventually.
Team News
Despite the disappointing performances in the first fixture, the two teams are expected to stick to the same lineup for the upcoming game.
South Australia Probable XI: Mackenzie Harvey, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Daniel Drew, Alex Carey (c/wk), Jason Sangha, Jake Lehmann, Harry Manenti, Wes Agar, Brendan Doggett, Lloyd Pope, Jordan Buckingham.
Western Australia Probable XI: Sam Fanning, Joel Curtis (wk), Cameron Bancroft, Sam Whiteman, Ashton Turner (c), Hilton Cartwright, Ashton Agar, Joel paris, Matthew Kelly, Liam Haskett.
