‌Sri Lanka started their Asia Cup T20 2025 campaign with a six-wicket win over Bangladesh in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Opener Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara set the foundation of the chase with a 95-run stand after leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga led a disciplined bowling performance to restrict the Tigers to a modest total.

Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera gave Sri Lanka the perfect start after captain Charith Asalanka opted to bowl at the Zayed Cricket Stadium. The new ball duo bowled back-to-back wicket maidens, accounting for both the Bangladesh openers to put them in a spot of bother. A brilliant piece of fielding in the deep from Kamil Mishara caught Towhid Hridoy well short of the crease and made it three. However, captain Litton Das (28) provided some resistance with three boundaries off Dasun Shanaka in the last over of the powerplay as the score read 30/3. But Wanindu Hasaranga’s introduction pulled things back for the Lankans as he picked up two wickets in his first two overs. With Bangladesh struggling at 54/5 at the halfway stage, Shamim Hossain joined Jaker Ali to try and repair the Tigers’ innings. The pair added an unbeaten 86 runs, the highest by Bangladesh for the sixth wicket in T20Is, to help Bangladesh to a defendable total. The pair plundered 18 runs in Matheesha Pathirana’s final over to guide the Tigers to 139/5 in the allotted 20 overs. Shamim hit three fours and a six to remain unbeaten on 42 off 34 balls, while Jaker played anchor during his 34-ball 41. Hasaranga was Sri Lanka’s most successful bowler, picking up 2/25 in four overs, while Thushara and Chameera finished with identical figures of 1/17.

In response, the Lankans started cautiously before Pathum Nissanka hit Mustafizur Rahman for the first six of the match in the second over. But the left-arm pacer struck back with the wicket of Kusal Mendis in the same over to slow down proceedings. However, number three batter Kamil Mishara showed some intent with two sixes and fours to smash 29 runs in the last two overs of the powerplay to reach 55/1. That rubbed off onto Nissanka as he smashed two boundaries of Mustafizur in the next over. From then on, there was no looking back as Sri Lanka kept accelerating their chase with an eye on the net run rate. The pair welcomed leg-spinner Rishad Hossain into the attack with an 18-run over before another big over from Mustafizur took the Lankans to 107/1 at the halfway stage. Nissanka completed his half-century off 31 balls before being dismissed by off-spinner Mahedi Hasan in the next over after scoring six fours and a six. But Mishara ensured that Sri Lanka completed the chase comfortably with 32 balls to spare. The left-handed batter remained unbeaten on 46 off 32 balls, hitting two sixes and four fours, as Sri Lanka finished at 140/4. Off-spinner Mahedi Hasan picked up 2/29 in four overs, while Mustafizur and Tanzim Hasan picked up a wicket each.
