Match Report
England Women began the ODI series with a commanding five-wicket win over India at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on Thursday. Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones starred with the bat, putting on a century stand for the opening wicket and also scoring half-centuries to help the side comfortably chase 247. Earlier, left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone led a disciplined England attack with an impressive spell of 3/31 in 10 overs to restrict India to 246/9 in 50 overs.
India Women, after opting to bat, relied heavily on opener Smriti Mandhana, with the batter hitting seven fours and two sixes to top-score for the side with an elegant 74. The top-order saw cautious starts from Pratika Rawal and Harleen Deol but both batters failed to convert promising starts, getting out in the 20s. Jemimah Rodrigues tried her best to bail out India with a 41-ball 36 but the visitors continued to lose wickets at the other end. Wicketkeeper batter Richa Ghosh’s cameo towards the end of the innings took India closer to the 250-run mark but India were clearly short of a winning total. For England, pacer Lauren Bell also chipped in with two wickets apart from Ecclestone’s game-changing spell.
England’s chase got off to a solid start with Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones displaying fluency against India’s seamers. Their 144-run stand neutralized early threats and set the foundation for an easy chase for the hosts. Beaumont hit nine fours and two sixes in her 98-ball 88 while Jones scored 69, including seven fours and a maximum, in 74 balls. Though the off-spin duo of Sneh Rana and Deepti Sharma briefly brought India into the match with three quick wickets, captain Nat Sciver-Brunt ensured there were no hiccups with a brisk 32. Her knock accelerated the England innings as they reached 248/5 and closed the contest with 21 balls to spare. Sneh ended with 2/43 in 10 overs while Deepti had a wicket to her name as the visitors went behind in the three-game contest.
Player of the Match
Tammy Beaumont was declared the Player of the Match for her match-defining 88 off 98 balls at the top of the England batting order setting the tone for the chase.
