For the second time in just a few years, Manchester United have turned to the transfer market for a new goalkeeper, completing an £18.2 million move for 23-year-old Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. The Belgian youth international has signed a five-year deal and is expected to make his debut in the upcoming Manchester derby. United’s decision came after early-season struggles from Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana, with manager Ruben Amorim seeking a more reliable long-term option.
Although Aston Villa’s World Cup-winning keeper Emiliano Martinez was also considered, United pulled out of talks due to the 32-year-old’s higher price tag, which was nearly double Lammens’ fee, and his wage demands of around £200,000 per week. With the club already spending over £200 million this summer and needing to stay within Premier League spending rules, Lammens represented a more affordable and future-focused signing.
The deal leaves United with four senior goalkeepers: Onana, Bayindir, Lammens, and veteran Tom Heaton. Onana has vowed to fight for his spot, but Bayindir is expected to leave on loan or permanently. Despite defending his goalkeepers publicly after their mistakes, Amorim privately pushed for this signing, hoping Lammens can establish himself as United’s long-term No.1.
