Neymar broke down after Santos endured a record 6-0 home loss to Vasco da Gama, their heaviest defeat in Serie A history. Philippe Coutinho struck twice as Vasco secured their biggest league win in 17 years. Coach Cleber Xavier was sacked after winning just 5 of 15 games, leaving Santos two points above relegation.
When the final whistle blew at Vila Belmiro, Neymar could not hold back his tears as Santos were humiliated 6-0 by Vasco da Gama in the Brazilian Serie A. It was the heaviest defeat of his career and the first time Santos had conceded six goals at home in the league. The result left the eight-time champions just two points clear of the relegation zone and cost coach Cleber Xavier his job after only 15 matches in charge, during which he managed five wins.
Philippe Coutinho starred for Vasco with two goals, helping his side secure their first league victory in six games and their biggest top-flight win in 17 years. Neymar admitted feeling ashamed and angry, acknowledging the fans’ right to protest. Since returning to Santos in January after leaving Al Hilal, the 33-year-old has scored six goals and provided three assists in 21 matches across all competitions, though his season has been disrupted by a hamstring injury.
Santos, who earned promotion back to Serie A last year after their first-ever relegation, now face a tough task to stay clear of danger. Their next challenge comes against fourth-placed Bahia on 24 August, with pressure mounting on the club to respond after this historic defeat.
