Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez, who scored six goals and provided five assists in 28 La Liga games last season, has turned down Manchester United’s €70m offer, along with interest from Chelsea and Aston Villa. Despite Barca’s willingness to sell, the 22-year-old has decided to remain at the club for at least this season.
After the completion of Benjamin Sesko’s signing from RB Leipzig, Manchester United turned their attention to strengthening their midfield, with Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez emerging as a target. United, struggling to control games during pre-season under Ruben Amorim, also pursued Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, but a move stalled due to Brighton’s high asking price. Lopez, who scored six goals and provided five assists in 28 La Liga appearances last season, attracted interest from United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa.
Reports suggested United were ready to pay €70 million for the 22-year-old, with Barcelona open to the deal. However, according to Sport, Lopez has made a “final decision” to remain at Barcelona for at least this season. He believes he can succeed at the club and will only consider leaving if Barcelona advise him to do so for financial or strategic reasons.
Aston Villa were the first to make a strong approach, followed by United and Chelsea, but none have been able to sway the midfielder. United’s offer, both in financial terms and personal conditions, was reportedly the most significant, yet Lopez’s refusal appears to have closed the door on a transfer. This decision leaves United still seeking midfield reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
