Rawals innings cut short by Gunratne catch

‌The first game of the Women’s ODI World Cup has begun with Sri Lanka Women winning the toss and putting India Women into bat at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The Lankan Lionesses had started the game well with an early wicket of Smriti Mandhana, but Pratika Rawal and Harleen Deol steadied the innings with a 50+ run stand. However, as soon as Rawal and Deol’s partnership started to look good, left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera came to the Lankan’s aid and broke the partnership in the 20th over.

It was Rawal who became the victim of the 39-year-old experienced campaigner. The young and promising opener was looking good at the crease and had scored 37 off 59 deliveries before finding Vishmi Gunaratne at deep mid-wicket on the second delivery of the over. While it was an unfortunate moment for Rawal, it was a moment of luck for Gunaratne who had almost mad a mess of the catch on the first attempt, but managed to hold onto it at the last minute. This was the catch that ended a good-looking innings from the upcoming batter.
