Agarkar on upcoming home series against West Indies

‌Ajit Agarkar has revealed his sentiments ahead of India’s first home series in 2025 against the West Indies. The Indian chief selector hopes to come back after their disappointing 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand in 2024 after announcing the squad for the upcoming two-match Test series.

The series against New Zealand not only ruined the Indian team’s 12-year winning streak at home but also played a major role in destroying their chances of making it to their third consecutive WTC finals as well. After announcing the squad for the upcoming series, Agarkar gave a detailed explanation of what he expects from the team going into the Test series.

“Of course, because of the WTC [World Test Championship], every Test match becomes very important. Obviously, we had a terrible series against New Zealand. Maybe it was a wake-up call. It was a lesson. We don't want that repeated. We've generally been, over a long time, very strong at home. It was after a while that we had a few bad results. And we want to try and put it behind us,” Agarkar said during the press conference.

“All these four Test matches that we play at home, against West Indies and South Africa, become very critical. We want to try and get as many points as possible, particularly at home. It's a game, so anything is possible. But we don't want to try and let what happened against New Zealand happen again,” Agarkar added.

The other factor that Agarkar has discussed is the number three spot, which was occupied by Indian greats Cheteshwar Pujara and Rahul Dravid in the past. One of the players who is expected to take this spot is Sai Sudharsan, who is one of the promising stars in Indian cricket right now.

“Eventually, it's a little bit about continuity. I think there were a few changes at No. 3 [in England], because of the combination that we played,” Agarkar said.

“So that just depends on what the captain and the coach at that point want, and what balance they want. But as far as going forward is concerned, Sai has shown a lot of promise. We know he's a very good player. Hopefully, we can give him a longish run from now on, at a particular number. Hopefully, going forward, we can give these guys time to actually build their careers,” the former Indian pacer concluded.
