Wicketkeepers have a thankless job to play in the game of cricket, especially after the introduction of the Decision Review System. Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey’s timely intervention helped his side to a crucial wicket against New Zealand in the first T20I at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

‌Australia made full use of the blustery conditions after captain Mitchell Marsh opted to bowl against New Zealand in the first T20I at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Wednesday. The pace duo of Josh Hazlewood and Ben Dwarshuis had the home team on the mat, reducing them to 6/3 inside two overs.

Halzewood dismissed opener Tim Seifert off the second ball of the match, while the fellow left-arm pacer brought back memories of Mitchell Starc as he sent Devon Conway’s middle stump flying. Things went from bad to worse as the Kiwis lost new batter Mark Chapman for a first-ball duck.

But the wicket was very much Alex Carey’s as it was Dwarshuis’ as the wicketkeeper stepped in with a timely advice to Marsh for a successful review. The left-arm seamer tried to go for the glory ball before getting it completely wrong to go down the pads of Chapman, who tried to glance it to fine leg.

But to the batter’s misfortune, he ended up with a thin nick with Carey completing a safe take down the leg side. Though the bowler and the keeper appealed in tandem, the umpire was unmoved as Marsh rushed in to check.

Carey was very confident that he heard a nick as Marsh quickly checked with Dwarshuis. The bolwer was uncertain whether to push for a review, but the keeper stood his ground as he repeated the decisive words which convinced Marsh to go for the call. Carey’s stand was vindicated as replays showed a thin edge as the ball passed the bat, and the players acknowledged his call.

Twitter was in awe as Carey jumped in at the right time to award the pacer two wickets in two balls.
