Brendan Taylor is set to return to the international arena for Zimbabwe for the first time since 2021, with a Test appearance against New Zealand in Bulawayo

Zimbabwe's Test skipper Craig Ervine has revealed that Brendan Taylor will be available for the second Test against New Zealand at Queen's Sports Club in Bulawayo beginning August 7. The Chevron was banned for three and a half years for breaching ICC's anti-corruption code, which ended on July 25.

Zimbabwe are set for the return of Brendan Taylor, their third highest run-getter of all time across formats, to the international arena for the first time since 2021 after a three and a half year ban imposed on him by the International Cricket Council lapsed recently. The 39-year-old featured in 274 games for the Chevrons before announcing sudden retirement in 2021, which he later attributed to drug abuse and a consequent failed test. A few months later, Taylor further revealed he had failed to promptly inform the authorities about a match-fixing approach that involved cocaine as a lure, and was forbidden from all cricket for the same till July 25, 2025.

‌"He'll obviously be available for the second Test," Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine said ahead of the first Test against New Zealand in Bulawayo on July 30.

"But I also know how hard he's worked in his individual capacity - especially over the last eight, ten 12 months - in order for this to happen. I'm very excited to have him come back into the space in the next few days, and looking forward to what he has to contribute towards the team and the group."

Taylor underwent drug and alcohol rehabilitation following retirement and was inclined towards a move in coaching once the ban ended. However, Zimbabwe Cricket's Managing Director Givemore Makoni convinced the veteran to rescind his retirement until the 2027 ODI World Cup set to be played at home. The right-hand batter was initially not named in the squad to face the Kiwis, albeit the ban was still active at the time of the announcement, and is expected to slot straight back into the line-up at his traditional number four spot currently occupied by Sean Williams who is likely to move lower down the batting order.

Taylor has represented Zimbabwe in 34 Tests and 205 ODIs so far, tallying 6,684 runs at 36.25 and 2,320 runs at 35.55 respectively. The Harare-born only sits behind the legendary Flower brothers in the all-time scoring lists for the country, and is just 102 runs away from becoming Zimbabwe's highest run-getter in ODIs.
