Cricket is a game that is played in the mind, and Rishabh Pant proved just that against England in Manchester. The Indian vice-captain, who was diagnosed with a fracture after getting hit on his foot by Chris Woakes, came on to continue his innings on the second day amid loud cheers from fans.

With England making quick inroads with the second new ball after holding India to 264/4 on day one of the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester, the visitors wanted someone to step up to help them to a formidable total.

Archer dismissed Ravindra Jadeja in the second over of the game, with overnight batter Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar showing some resistance against the new cherry with a 48-run partnership, but skipper Ben Stokes broke the association with Ben Duckett taking an excellent catch at gully.

India were on 314/6 and looking to add some crucial runs to get to a formidable first innings total. Rishabh Pant, who broke his foot while attempting a reverse sweep the last day, was seen in the dressing room wearing his whites at the start of the day’s play. That gave rise to speculations that he would step onto the field to complete his batting innings, with the BCCI announcing that he may take the field with the bat if the team requires.

Though he was ruled out of the series and advised six weeks' rest, the Indian vice-captain made his way down the stairs to continue his innings. The crowd welcomed him with the loudest of cheers as he crossed the boundary rope and limped onto the field.

The wicketkeeper-batter showed great resilience to come back and continue his innings at a time the team needed it the most. Twitteratti had goosebumps as Pant walked to the middle amidst loud cheers, even from England fans.
