AUS-C vs WI-C, Review | Australia Champions finish chase within 10 overs to win first WCL game

Australia Champions gave the West Indies Champions an eight-wicket thrashing at the County Ground in Northampton on July 23. While Aussie bowlers restricted the Windies to a below-par 142, Chris Lynn stole the show with his explosive half-century to seal a maiden win for the Canary Yellows.
The Australia Champions chose to field first in Northampton and put the West Indies Champions under pressure immediately, as Aussie skipper Brett Lee gave his team the early breakthrough of William Perkins in the third over. Though West Indies captain Chris Gayle and Dwayne Smith played some swashbuckling shots towards the end of the powerplay, the team could only score 46 runs in the first six overs at the loss of one wicket. Straight after the fielding restrictions were lifted, the Caribbean Kings' nightmare continued as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. While Steve O’Keefe broke the partnership by dismissing Gayle, Nathan Coulter-Nile caused more problems in the ensuing ninth over by dismissing Smith and Chadwick Walton on consecutive deliveries. This mini collapse put the team in a precarious position of 67/4 at the halfway stage.
The start of the second half of the Windies innings saw the back of the dangerous Kieron Pollard, who was dismissed for just 10 by part-time left-arm wrist spinner D'Arcy Short. However, there was a decent partnership between Lendl Simmons and Dwayne Bravo as they tried to keep the innings afloat. As soon as hopes of a recovery were ignited, Peter Siddle made sure to keep the Aussie dominance alive with a soft caught and bowled dismissal of Simmons in the 16th over and a double wicket over in the 18th as the Windies lost all their recognized batters with two overs to spare and the score at 129/8. Lee and Coulter-Nile wrapped things up in the last two to restrict their rivals to a below-par total of 142, with Siddle ended as the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/28 in his four overs.
Unlike the West Indies Champions, the Men from Down Under got off to a flyer courtesy of Chris Lynn, who ruthlessly attacked the bowlers from ball one. Despite an early wicket of Shaun Marsh in the third over, Lynn brought up his half-century in the last over of the powerplay as the Aussie Champs finished the fielding restrictions with the score on 73 for the loss of just one wicket. The Queensland opening batter continued his onslaught thereafter and though he was eventually dismissed by Nikita Miller in the eighth over, the damage had already done with his man-of-the-match effort reading a ludicrous 81 off just 27 deliveries. An onslaught by wicket-keeper batter Ben Dunk followed to pick up exactly where Lynn had left, his quickfire unbeaten cameo of 30 off just nine deliveries making sure the target was chased down within 10 overs to hand Australia their first win of the tournament.
