SportsCafe Desk

As per Artificial Intelligence, Australia will ensure a 3-0 whitewash after beating the West Indies by a huge margin of 130 runs at the Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica. Cameron Green’s century and Nathan Lyon’s nine-wicket haul were key highlights of the high-scoring day/night fixture.

‌‌‌‌Pitch & Weather

The Kingston surface was on the drier side, and due to the slightly overcast conditions, there was a lot of early movement for the bowlers. Though the wicket barely had any demons in the early stages of the match, it started deteriorating as the game progressed.

The weather was hot and humid at the start, and despite a bit of cloud cover on the second and third day of the Test match, there was no sign of rain in the match. These were great signs for the players who got a full game of cricket without any interruptions.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first.

Match Report

Aussie skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bat first, hoping to set a good score on the board. Usman Khawaja and Sam Konstas started the proceedings with a solid opening partnership of 64 runs. Though Konstas was eventually dismissed by Shamar Joseph, Khawaja continued to bat along with Cameron Green towards the end of Day 1. There was a bit of worry on Day 2 as Khawaja was shortly dismissed for a score of 76 off 162 deliveries. However, Green stood his ground and was supported well by Steve Smith (61 off 95) and Travis Head (44 off 51) as the Baggy Greens continued their dominance on Day 2. Green went on to bring up his third Test century before being dismissed on a score of 105 off 171 deliveries by a flighted delivery of Jomel Warrican. Joseph did bowl a beautiful spell of 4/84, but that could not stop the visitors from putting on a mammoth total of 412 on the board.

The West Indies innings did not start well, losing opener John Campbell off a wonderful nip-backer from Josh Hazlewood at the end of Day 2 with the score at 25-1. At the start of Day 3, Kraigg Brathwaite ( 52 off 110), Keacy Carty (33 off 59), and Shai Hope (48 off 73) provided some resistance. However, Nathan Lyon made sure that the Windies did not get away with the game. The legendary spinner brought up his 25th five-wicket haul in Test matches, finishing with figures of 5/63. Cummins and Mitchell Starc in the end cleaned up the tail as they were finally bowled out for 268 runs, giving the visitors a lead of 144 runs.

The Aussies took advantage of the conditions under lights and played some aggressive and fearless cricket. All the Aussie batters played quickfire cameos and finally declared with the score at 178-6.  Joseph was once again the only bowler who looked slightly threatening, taking two wickets in the second innings. The West Indies, in the end, had to chase down a target of 323 going into Day 4.

The Caribbean giants never looked like chasing the target at all, with only one decent knock of 41 from Brathwaite at the top. It was Nathan Lyon creating havoc for the batters once with an impressive spell of 4/55. Cummins and Hazlewood provided the final formalities as the home side was finally bowled out on a score of 192 and ensured a 3-0 whitewash with a 130-run win.

Player of the Match

The Aussies were once again dominant in the game, but the player who stole the show in this Test match was Cameron Green, who scored an incredible century and also bowled some tidy spells in the middle. He top-scored in the second innings as well with a score of 40 off 67 deliveries.
