Harry Brook goes past Joe Root to be top-ranked Test batter; Shubman Gill moves to sixth

‌Harry Brook moved to the top of the batting charts as per the International Cricket Council’s latest Test batting rankings for men. The England white-ball skipper moved past teammate and veteran batter Joe Root, who currently occupies the second spot. The middle-order batter has been in good form, scoring 99 in the first innings of the first Test in Leeds before hitting 158 in the second game at Edgbaston.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill also leaped 15 places to be in sixth in the latest list after his record-breaking spree in the first two Tests. Gill scored 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second in Birmingham to be second in the overall list of most runs scored by a player in a single Test match.

He has already amassed 585 runs from four innings in the series and is in contention to go past Don Bradman’s 974 runs, the most by a batter in a single series, which came against England in 1930. Yashasvi Jaiswal is the top-ranked Indian batter in fourth place and is the only opener to be in the top 10, while Rishabh Pant rounds off India’s presence at eighth. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja continue to be on top of the Test bowling and all-rounders list, respectively.

For England, wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith became the third batter to get into the top 10 with his exploits in the last two matches, taking him to 10th. He top-scored for England in both innings at Edgbaston with his knocks of 184* and 88, helping him gain a massive 16 places.

Wiaan Mulder also made significant progress with his record-breaking knock of 367 not out against Zimbabwe in the second Test. The Proteas stand-in skipper jumped 34 places to be on 22nd in the batter’s list and improved 12 places to be placed third in the all-rounders list.
