SB vs WF, Review | Fire finish at last place as Roy and Overton performances seals victory for Brave

Southern Brave edge out a four-run win against Welsh Fire in the last league game of the Hundred Men's on Thursday at the Rose Bowl Stadium. While the Fire finish at the bottom despite Tom Kohler-Cadmore's valiant knock, Jason Roy and Craig Overton's performances seal the deal for the Brave
Welsh Fire won the toss and elected to field first in the last league game of the season. The visitors started well with the ball, with Riley Meredith and David Payne dismissing the two openers cheaply. Though there were some attractive shots played towards the end of the power play by Jason Roy, it was the Fire who dominated the first 25 balls, restricting Southern Brave to a score of 34/2. It seemed like the Welsh franchise would continue their dominance with Ben Kellaway cleaning up James Cole straight after the power player. However, Roy, along with Leus du Plooy, made sure The Southeners recovered from their tricky position and got to a decent score of 79/3 at the halfway stage. The partnership of 55 was looking good until du Plooy was finally dismissed by Josh Hull on the 60th ball after being a victim of an incredible catch by Tom Kohler-Cadmore at long-off. Though the dismissal might have broken a crucial partnership, Roy continued to score runs at the other end. The English batter continued to carry the innings despite losing partners at the other end as the Brave scored 48 runs in the next 25 balls, which took the score to 127/5 at the end of 75 balls. Roy helped the hosts set a great platform, but Fire came back in the game as he was finally dismissed after an incredible innings of 70 off 39 deliveries came to an end on the 80th ball. The situation got worse with Michael Bracewell getting run out by Fire’s skipper Tom Abell in the next over. However, Craig Overton and Jordan Thompson made up for the two wickets with an important stand of 39 of 18 for the seventh wicket. With 40 runs coming in the final 25 balls, the Brave ended the innings on a score of 167/7.
The Southerners put a decent total on the board after a flurry of runs at the death and managed to keep the momentum going with the ball, with Overton starting with a brilliant ten-ball over with wickets of Steve Eskinazi and Steve Smith. Trouble started brewing in the next over as the in-form Jonny Bairstow was also dismissed by Jordan Thompson after edging it through to the keeper on the 15th ball. Fire were in a tough position after the power play, with the score reading 24/3 after 25 balls. There was some respite for the Welsh in the middle overs, with a partnership between Cadmore and Abell looking good in the middle overs. Unfortunately, the threat of the partnership between the captain and Cadmore could not last long, with Overton coming to spoil the party with a wicket of Abell on the 41st ball. The struggles continued for the Fire with the score at 67/4 after 50 balls. While the first half of the chase was disappointing for the chasing team, Cadmore, along with Kellaway, brought the game back in the balance with a crucial partnership. With 52 runs coming in the next 25 deliveries, the duo took the score to 119/4 after 75 balls and needed 49 runs from the last 25 balls of the match. Both batters looked set and were going to take the team over the line until the partnership of 81 was finally broken as Kellaway was dismissed on 33 by James Cole on the 80th ball. Though this partnership was broken during a crucial moment in the chase, Cadmore took the game as deep as possible and brought the equation down to 18 off the last five deliveries. The last over was bowled by Thompson, and it was looking like Fire’s game with the first two deliveries going for 11 runs. Nevertheless, the tables suddenly turned with one delivery as Cadmore dragged the ball onto his stumps on the 98th ball, which brought an end to his valiant knock of 84 off 46 deliveries. Thompson kept his nerves in the final two balls, and the Brave managed to eke out a thrilling four-run win to end their season with a win, while The Fire finished at the bottom for the third time in the tournament.
Craig Overton was awarded the player of the match for his incredible all-round performance, playing a crucial cameo of 18 off 11 with the bat and a terrific spell of 3/22 with the ball.
