Match Report

A packed Trent Bridge witnessed a thrilling contest as the Manchester Originals held their nerve to defeat the Trent Rockets by five wickets in Match 20 of the Hundred Men’s 2025 campaign. Jos Buttler’s composed half-century anchored the chase after pacer Josh Tongue shone with a three-wicket haul to help the visitors notch their third win in four matches.

Sent in to bat, Trent Rockets began with intent as Tom Banton peppered the off-side with crisp strokeplay. He smashed six fours and two sixes, setting the tempo during his 44 off 28 balls. But the departure of Joe Root followed a quiet phase for the home side, with Rehan Ahmed and Max Holden also leaving without adding much. However, Marcus Stoinis (27) briefly reignited hopes with a couple of sixes, along with Tom Moores, who continued his fine form, blasting 32 off 18. But wickets at regular intervals kept pegging back the Rockets as they ended at 163/7 in the allotted 100 balls. Josh Tongue was the pick among the visitors’ bowlers with a spell of 3/26 in 20 balls, while Scott Currie chipped in with two wickets.

Chasing 164, Phil Salt and Buttler put on a measured yet attacking stand after the dismissal of Ben McKinney, striking boundaries frequently to keep the asking rate steady. Salt counter-attacked with five fours and two sixes, hitting 39 off 25 balls, to push the Originals to a position of advantage at the end of the powerplay. Meanwhile, Buttler shifted gears seamlessly, as he mixed placement with power while anchoring the visitors’ chase to perfection. He made up for his slow start to hit six fours and two sixes during his 36-ball 54, his third straight half-century in the tournament this year. Ferguson’s double strike, removing Salt and Rachin Ravindra, created some tension, but Klaasen’s brisk 28 off 17 provided the finishing spark. The former South African batter hit two fours and two sixes before departing with the target in sight, but Lewis Gregory’s (12*) calm presence ensured Originals crossed the line to end at 164/5 with four balls to spare. Ferguson picked up 2/30 in his four sets, while Rehan Ahmed and Marcus Soinis had a wicket each.

Player of the Match

Jos Buttler was awarded the Player of the Match for his composed knock of 54 off 36 balls, his third consecutive fifty, to anchor the chase for the Originals.
