Match Report

Oval Invincibles won the toss and decided to bat first in their second home game of the season. The defending champions got off to a flyer with Will Jacks backing his natural attacking game while Twana Muyeye was rotating the strike at the other end. The Invincibles ended the power play on a score of 42/0 after 25 balls and setting a good platform in the beginning. The Welsh Fire needed a breakthrough to get back in the chase, and it finally came on the 34th ball as Muyeye’s stumps were knocked over by Chris Green. Despite the dismissal, Jacks was joined by Jordan Cox, who made sure that he kept the runs flowing at one end while Jacks continued to attack the bowlers. At the halfway stage, the Invincibles were still in a solid position at 80/1. While the first half of the innings went smoothly for the hosts, the second half did not have the best beginnings as Jacks was dismissed on a score of 42 off 23 deliveries by Riley Meredith. While this dismissal came at a crucial time, Cox decided to take the innings forward and got some great support from Sam Curran at the other end. The 50+ partnership between the two made sure the Oval franchise was in a strong position with the score at 122/2 after 75 balls. It was important for the Invincibles to finish on a strong total, but Meredith had other plans as he finally broke the dangerous partnership in his second over by dismissing Cox for 30. The very next over saw David Payne trap Curran in front of his stumps and put the home team in a spot of bother. Fire seemed to be ruling the death overs with Meredith returning for his final over and dismissing Oval skipper Sam Billings. However, the cameos from Donnovan Ferreira and Tom Curran made sure that some crucial runs came at the backend. Though Farreira was eventually dismissed in the final over for 24 off 12 balls by Payne, the Invincibles still managed to get to a competitive total of 167/6 in the end.

All the eyes were on the experienced Welsh Fire opening pair of Jonny Bairstow and Steve Smith, and the two delivered with a bang, putting the Invicibles bowlers under pressure straight away. The Anglo-Aussie duo set the tone in the power play with the score reading 47/0 after 25 balls. The two batters continued to wreak havoc on the two-time champions until Rashid Khan came to the rescue and got the important wicket of Smith, who was dismissed for a score of 35 off 27 after top-edging a sweep shot to the keeper. The Afghan leggie did not stop there as he came for another over to trap Tom Kohler Cadmore in front of his stumps as the batter failed to read the wrong-un. Despite the two dismissals, the Fire were still in the game at 85/1 after 50 balls. With Jonny Bairstow at the crease and Tom Abell just about finding his feet, the visitors seemed to have slightly tilted the game towards them. Unfortunately, the Invincibles managed to come back into the game as Curran ended Bairstow’s incredible innings of 54 by deceiving him with a slower ball, which crashed into middle and leg stump. Abell was dismissed in the very next over by a returning Jason Behrendorff, who was expensive in his first spell. The game was suddenly in a tight spot with the Fire’s score at 124/4, needing 37 off the last 25 balls. Though the two quick wickets did put the team in a tricky position, Paul Walter and Luke Wells started their innings well with a couple of boundaries each. Sadly, they did not last that long with Walter being dismissed by a straight and full ball by Saqib Mahmood and Wells giving a simple caught and bowled chance to Nathan Sowter in the very next over. The match was down to the final over with 14 runs needed of the last five balls and was bowled by Behrendoff. While the Aussie might have been welcomed with a huge six by Saif Zaib, he came back with a toe-crushing yorker off the very next ball, which uprooted his middle stumps. The left-arm seamer kept his nerves in the last three balls as the Invincibles won the game by six runs and maintained their unbeaten streak against the Fire.
