Match Report

The wicket at Headingley was nice and hard, which led to Birmingham Phoenix winning the toss and choosing to bat first. The innings started well for the Phoenix with Ben Ducket and Will Smeed getting off to a flyer. The two openers were looking good at the crease after the first 25 balls, with the score reading 45/0. The visitors were in a great position at the halfway stage as the duo continued the run-flow and took the score to 79/0. However, there was a bit of a break in the scoring as Adil Rashid came into the attack and took the important wicket of Smeed, who slogged the ball straight down the throat of deep-mid wicket on a score of 44 off 27 deliveries. Though Duckett was still looking solid at the crease, the same could not be said about Joe Clarke, who struggled against the spin duo of Rashid and Mitchell Santner. His struggles came to an end by Jacob Duffy, who deceived him with a slower off-cutter, which the latter ended up lobbing straight to mid-on. It seemed like the Superchargers finally got things under control until Livingstone came to the crease and started to attack the bowlers straight away. Despite losing two big wickets, the team was still in a solid position at 122/3 after 75 balls. Duckett was dismissed on the 77th ball by Rashid as he missed the sweep shot completely and saw the ball crash into his stumps on a score of 38. Livingstone might have welcomed Duffy with a couple of sixes in his final over, but the Kiwi pacer had the last laugh as he finally got the important break through of the Birmingham franchise skipper on a quickfire cameo of 28 off 18 balls. However, the two wickets were followed by some important cameos from Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley. Though the two were eventually dismissed, their crucial stand took the team to an above-par score of 164/6.

The wicket seemed to have got better in the second innings as the Superchargers' openers were looking in great nick from the start. While Zak Crawley took the attack to the bowlers, Dawid Malan kept his composure and played some elegant strokes at the other end of the first 25 balls, with the score reading 53/0. It seemed like the Superchargers were running away with the game as they remained wicketless at the halfway stage at 90/0. However, Trent Boult who, proved too expensive in his first spell came back in the second to dismiss both the openers. Crawley's terrific innings of 51 off 33 deliveries came to an end as he lobbed a simple catch back to the bowler, and Malan’s off-stump was uprooted by a well-executed yorker by the veteran pacer on 42. With two new batters at the crease, the Superchargers' innings suddenly slumped to 123/2 after 75 balls, needing 42 off 25 balls. There was a brief moment at the death where Phoenix threatened to take the game away from Superchargers with two quick wickets. While Michael Kyle Pepper top-edged a pull shot to the keeper off Benny Howell, Southee got the wicket of Dan Lawrence, who chopped the ball onto his stumps. Unfortunately for the Phoenix bowlers, all it took was a terrific unbeaten cameo of 32 off 17 deliveries by Chargers captain Harry Brook to finish the game with six wickets remaining and six balls to spare.
