ZIM vs NZ | Twitter laughs as surprised Conway chests rising ripper onto stumps after clinical ton

Devon Conway's first Test ton for New Zealand in over two years, against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, ended in strange fashion on Friday

Surviving the new ball is propounded as the hardest job in Tests and while one would imagine being at the crease for 80 prior overs would make it easier, Friday suggested otherwise. Devon Conway was left looking amateurish by Blessing Muzarabani in Bulawayo, culminating in a hilarious dismissal.

‌Zimbabwe's woes in the second Test against New Zealand worsened on Day 2 as the visitors piled onto their overnight score of 179/1, having already long surpassed the hosts' 125 on the opening evening. Devon Conway, resuming on 79, looked comfortable as ever in bringing up his fifth Test ton and a first in over two and a half years. After a flamboyant celebration, the opener got back to business as usual and barely looked in trouble to bring up just his second 150 in Tests on the last ball of the 80th over with his 18th boundary of the game. However, the complexion of the game changed drastically immediately when the Chevrons opted for the second new ball, marking the beginning of Conway's end.

Conway's struggles against the fresh new Kookaburra began with a brutal blow to the thigh courtesy of a sharp inducker from Tanaka Chivanga that struck the Kiwi square in the flesh. Nevertheless, the opener contended against the onslaught by looking to rotate strike, an approach that brought him a couple of runs against the quick but left him unprepared for the challenge posed by Blessing Muzarabani when he finally came up against the tall right-arm midway through the 83rd ovoer. Steaming in from around the wicket, Muzarabani pitched his very first delivery of the new spell to Conway short and slightly outside off stump with the angle taking the red cherry towards the batter. However, Conway judged the delivery to be wide enough to shoulder arms, only for it to jag back incredulously and thump into the chest. Conway instinctively hopped and contorted himself to protect the body but before he could react productively, the ball richocheted off his body and uprooted the middle stump clean out of the ground.

Conway was left in disbelief as he stared back and forth between the bowler and the pitch, eventually resigning himself to a long trot back to the pavilion. Twitterati could not decide whether to praise Muzarabani, sympathize with Conway, or simply laugh at the comical visuals at hand.

What a way to get out!
