Match Report

In an engaging series opener, Pakistan Women beat Ireland Women by six wickets at Castle Avenue in Dublin. Aliya Riaz top-scored in the contest with an unbeaten 42 off 28 balls as the visitors chased down the target of 142 comfortably, with 11 balls to spare. Earlier, the left-arm spin duo of Nashra Sandhu and Sadia Iqbal registered figures of 2/20 and 2/27 in their respective four overs to restrict Ireland to 141/6 with Orla Prendergast scoring 39 off 28 balls.

Ireland made a confident start after choosing to bat, with openers Amy Hunter and Gaby Lewis laying the platform with a 51-run stand in the Powerplay. Skipper Gaby (25) scored three boundaries before being the first batter to be dismissed, while Amy hit five fours during her knock of 36. Orla Prendergast looked the most fluent of the batters, mixing boundaries with clever placement, finishing as the home side’s top scorer with 39 off 28 balls.  She hit four fours and a six, but soon Ireland came under pressure against the duo of Sandhu and Iqbal. They applied a stranglehold from overs 10 to 16, picking four wickets between them and reducing Ireland’s tempo. Ireland ended nine runs short of the 150-run mark, competitive but perhaps 15 runs short of ideal on a batting-friendly track.

Pakistan’s chase had early jitters as Eyman Fatima fell cheaply, but Muneeba Ali and Sidra Amin stitched together a fluent partnership, targeting Ireland’s medium-pacers. Their 58-run stand rebuilt the innings before Lara McBride struck twice to bring Ireland back into the game. However, Aliya Riaz countered beautifully, launching a late assault with clean strikes down the ground, ably supported by Fatima Sana. Riaz smashed two sixes and three fours during her quickfire knock while Sana remained unbeaten on 14. Their unbeaten 41-run partnership helped the Women in Green finish the game in the penultimate over and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Player of the Match

Aliya Riaz was rightly named Player of the Match for her game-defining innings during the run chase.
