Churchill Brothers were held to a 1-1 draw by Sreenidi Deccan after conceding a controversial 100th-minute penalty in an I-League clash. Pape Gassama 29th-minute goal gave Churchill the lead. Despite dominating, they failed to extend it. David Castaneda last-gasp penalty equalized, leaving Churchill top with 38 points, just three ahead of Inter Kashi.

While the I-League clash between Churchill Brothers and Sreenidi Deccan seemed destined for a Churchill win, a dramatic 100th-minute penalty denied them three crucial points. Churchill, leading 1-0 through a stunning 29th-minute strike by Senegalese midfielder Pape Gassama, held on till the seven minutes of added time displayed by the fourth official. However, referee Crystal John controversially allowed play to continue beyond eight minutes. In the 100th minute, Lalliansanghe Renthlei was adjudged to have fouled Lalromawia, leading to a penalty that David Castaneda converted to level the match 1-1.

The late decision shocked Churchill owner Churchill Alemao, who walked out in disbelief. Churchill Brothers, chasing their third I-League title and an Indian Super League promotion, remain top with 38 points but are only three points ahead of Inter Kashi, who have a game in hand. Churchill immediately filed an official protest, questioning the referee’s extension of added time and the penalty decision.

Despite creating several chances, Churchill failed to extend their lead, with missed opportunities from Stendly Fernandes, Trijoy Dias, and substitute Rafiq Aminu. The match’s ending left Churchill frustrated, especially with the potential title decider against Inter Kashi looming next Sunday.
