Despite reports linking Marcus Rashford to Tottenham, Spurs chose to make Mathys Tel’s £38.5m move permanent. Journalist Henry Winter expressed surprise that Rashford, earning £300k weekly, wasn’t targeted as Son Heung-min’s successor. Spurs avoided the high wage demands, with Tel seen as a more sustainable option under new manager Thomas Frank.

In the summer of 2025, Tottenham Hotspur are entering a new chapter under newly appointed manager Thomas Frank. The club has made Mathys Tel’s move permanent for £30 million, following an £8.5 million loan fee paid in January. The 20-year-old French forward is seen as a long-term successor to Son Heung-min, who, at 32, is linked with moves to the Saudi Pro League and Turkey.

Interestingly, veteran journalist Henry Winter revealed he expected Marcus Rashford to join Spurs, especially with Son likely to leave. Rashford, currently on a £300k per week contract at Manchester United, was seen as a strong Premier League-ready option. However, Spurs opted for the younger, more cost-effective Tel, avoiding Rashford’s high wage demands and £40 million fee.

Frank, known for developing attacking talent like Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney, is enthusiastic about Tel’s future and played a crucial role in making the deal permanent. Meanwhile, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy cited Frank’s intelligence, communication, and personality as key reasons for replacing Ange Postecoglou, despite his Europa League triumph. Tottenham aim to compete on all fronts, and Frank’s arrival marks a strategic push toward long-term consistency and squad evolution.
