Barcelona has officially handed the legendary No. 10 shirt, once worn by Lionel Messi, to 18-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal. Having already played 106 matches and scored 25 goals for the club, Yamal replaces Ansu Fati, now on loan to Monaco. The shirt has also been worn by Barcelona icons like Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, and Maradona.

For the Barcelona faithful, July 2025 marked a symbolic new chapter as teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was handed the club’s legendary No. 10 shirt, once worn by Lionel Messi. The 18-year-old winger, who already boasts 106 appearances and 25 goals for the Blaugrana, takes over the iconic number from Ansu Fati, who has been loaned to AS Monaco. Yamal’s elevation comes shortly after signing a contract extension that ties him to the club until 2031.

Barcelona confirmed the shirt change during a celebratory event with Yamal and his family, though it comes amid an investigation into alleged disability law violations at his birthday event. Yamal had been dropping social media hints of the jersey switch, posting images of No. 10 greats like Messi, Ronaldinho, and Maradona. Messi wore the No. 10 for over a decade, guiding the club to 10 La Liga and 4 Champions League titles.

While Ansu Fati inherited the number post-Messi, injuries hampered his impact. Now, Yamal becomes the fourth player in his short career to wear a different shirt number, having started with No. 41. With two La Liga titles and a Euro win with Spain already on his résumé, Yamal now carries the weight of a legendary legacy.
