West Ham are in talks with Fenerbahce, after Jose Mourinho requested the signing of Edson Alvarez. The midfielder, bought for £34m from Ajax in 2023, has fallen out with Graham Potter and was an unused substitute in the 3-0 defeat to Sunderland. West Ham want at least £19m, with Ajax and other clubs also interested.

For the second time in just a few months, Graham Potter finds himself under heavy pressure at West Ham after a disastrous start to the new Premier League season. The Hammers were thrashed 3-0 by newly-promoted Sunderland on the opening day, a result that highlighted their lack of quality and depth, particularly in midfield. Potter, who managed only five wins in 19 matches during his first half-season in charge, has stressed togetherness and fitness throughout pre-season, but none of that was evident in the defeat.

The club’s transfer business has also been under scrutiny, with only four senior arrivals so far, two of whom are regular starters. The midfield remains their biggest weakness, yet financial constraints mean West Ham must sell before they buy. Among those expected to leave is Edson Alvarez, the Mexican international signed from Ajax for £34m in 2023.

Alvarez fell out with Potter late last season and was left out against Sunderland, further fueling speculation about his exit. Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho has made Alvarez a top target, with talks already underway. West Ham are seeking at least £19m, and the move could provide Potter with vital funds to rebuild his squad and salvage the season.
