Pep Guardiola’s reshaped side impressed, as Wolves struggled despite showing fight in an emotional game at Molineux.
As the new Premier League season kicked off, Manchester City delivered a commanding performance with a 4-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux. Erling Haaland once again proved his value, scoring twice to extend his remarkable record of netting in all four of his season openers in England. The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Haaland tapped in from Rico Lewis’s cross, and just three minutes later, debutant Tijjani Reijnders marked his arrival with a fine finish after being set up by Oscar Bobb.
Haaland struck again in the 61st minute, firing low past Jose Sa after Bobb’s assist, sealing his brace before being substituted. Rayan Cherki, another new signing, added a late fourth in the 81st minute to complete City’s dominant display. Pep Guardiola’s side looked refreshed after a trophyless 2024 campaign, with Reijnders and Cherki making immediate impacts while goalkeeper James Trafford confidently replaced the ill Ederson.
Wolves showed fight but were punished for defensive lapses, as admitted by manager Vitor Pereira. The match also carried emotional weight, with fans paying tribute to former Wolves star Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically died in July. City’s strong start signalled clear intent to reclaim the Premier League crown after finishing third last season.
