Coventry City began their Championship season with a 0-0 home draw against Hull City, marking their fourth straight winless opener. Manager Frank Lampard praised the clean sheet and overall control but admitted his side lacked the final attacking edge, estimating a 5% shortfall in the final third that cost them victory.

Seeing the Championship season begin at the CBS Arena, Coventry City were held to a goalless draw by Hull City in their opening match. Manager Frank Lampard, who has now lost only two of his 16 home games in charge, felt his side lacked a small edge in attack to turn one point into three. It marked the fourth consecutive year that Coventry have failed to win their first league fixture.

Lampard told BBC CWR he was pleased with the clean sheet and believed Coventry were the better team, controlling possession and spending much of the match in Hull’s half. However, he admitted that in the final third, there was about “five percent” missing from their performance, preventing them from finding the decisive goal. The manager noted that his side “looked like us” in terms of style and approach, but without the clinical finish, they could not capitalise on their dominance.

Despite the frustration of not starting with a win, Lampard will take positives from the defensive solidity and overall control displayed. Coventry now turn their attention to building attacking sharpness as they aim to secure their first victory of the new campaign in upcoming fixtures.
