Western Australia defeated South Australia by 66 runs to register their first win in the ongoing campaign in the One Day Cup 2025. Star pacer Joel Paris shone with the ball, picking an amazing five-wicket haul (5/42) helped his side bundle out South Australia at the score of just 232 runs.

South Australia skipper Jason Sangha won the toss and asked Western Australia to bat first. Western Australia’s opening pair of Sam Fanning and Joel Curtis provided a brilliant opening start of 86 runs in 12.3 overs. Both the batters launched an amazing attack over the bowling attack of South Australia as they scored runs with a run rate of more than seven runs per over. Harry Manenti broke this partnership on the third ball of the 13th over, dismissing Joel Curtis as he was caught behind by the wicketkeeper Harry Nielsen. Curtis contributed with a impactful knock of 44 runs off just 33 balls, with six fours and a six. Furthermore, Sam Fanning and Cameron Bancroft carried the momentum forward in their side’s favour, with another crucial 88-run partnership for the second wicket. Fanning went on to score 75 runs off 91 balls, with four fours and three sixes, before getting caught by Nielsen off Jordan Buckingham on the second ball of the 29th over. Fanning’s dismissal was followed by two more dismissals in quick succession, of just 18 runs, and they. But then came a stabilising partnership of 31 runs between Cameron Bancroft and Hilton Cartwright. Bancroft scored 63 runs off 76 balls, with two fours and a six, followed by Cartwright’s 55 (51). On the back of these contributions, Western Australia posted 298/9 on the board in the allotted 50 overs. Buckingham, Hanno Jacobs, and Lloyd Pope scalped two wickets each, alongside a wicket each picked by Wes Agar and Harry Manenti.

While chasing the target, South Australia faced an early blow at the team score of just 37 runs in 4.3 overs, when Jake Fraser-McGurk was caught by Esterhuysen off Joel Paris on the third ball of the fifth over. He could score only 14 runs off 10 balls. Furthermore, Danniel Drew (3) also fell cheaply, after adding 28 runs for the second wicket with opener Mackenzie Harvey. However, Harvey held the one end strongly; he added 19 runs for the third wicket with skipper Jason Sangha (18), followed by a 37-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Jake Lehman (33). Harvey’s valiant effort came to an end at an individual score of 76 runs off 65 balls, with 11 fours and a six when he was dismissed off Matthew Kelly on the first ball of the 23rd over. Furthermore, it was only Harry Manenti who contributed with 39 runs before the lower middle order collapsed, and South Australia were bundled out at the score of 232 runs in just 44.3 overs. with this win, Western Australia have moved to the fourth spot in the tournament’s points table. Earlier, they faced a defeat in the first game of their campaign in the tournament.

Joel Paris shone with the ball for Western Australia, claiming a stunning five-wicket haul. He claimed five wickets for just 42 runs in 9.3 overs. Besides him, Albert Esterhuysen also picked three wickets for 42 runs in his seven overs, alongside a wicket each bagged by Bryce Jackson and Matthew Kelly.
