Bangladesh emerged victorious in the first game of the Super Fours against Sri Lanka by four wickets at the Dubai International Stadium on Saturday. Dasun Shanka's all-round efforts go in vain as Bangladesh complete the chase with one ball to spare and get the better of the Lions in the Nagin Derby.
Bangladesh won the toss and put Sri Lanka into bat in the first Super Four match, only to face the wrath of Lankan openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, who took the attack to the Bangladesh batters. Though Nissanka was eventually dismissed in the fifth over by Taskin Ahmed, they still managed to finish the powerplay on a healthy score of 53/1. Though the Tigers failed to contain the Lions in the power play, Mahedi Hasan brought the team back into the game with a wicket of Mendis on 34, and cleaned up Kamil Mishara in the 10th over, who failed to execute the switch hit. These two scalps affected the scoring rate and put the Island nation at a slightly tough position as the score read 72/3. Bangladesh continued to contain the batters in the second half of the innings and also managed to dismiss Kusal Perera, who edged the ball through to the keeper off Mustafizur Rahman. However, Dasun Shanaka and Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka broke the shackles with two big overs and put the team in a decent position at 129/4 after 16 overs. The two put on 57 runs for the fifth wicket, with Shanka bringing up his half-century in 30 deliveries. Though the Island nation got a bit of a surprise in the 19th over as Asalanka was run out after being dropped on the first delivery, and Mustafizur followed it up with a couple of more scalps. However, Shanaka made up for the three-wicket over by striking ten runs in the 20th over as he remains unbeaten on 64 and took his team to a dependable score of 168/7.
Bangladesh, unlike Sri Lanka, might not have had a strong opening partnership as Tanzid Hasan’s off stump was flattened in the first over by Nuwan Thusara, but Litton Das and Saif Hassan made sure they made up for the early wicket with some explosive strokes towards the end of the first six overs. The two finished the power play in a strong position at 59/1 with both batters looking set at the crease. The Lankans had a chance of getting back in the game as Das was dismissed straight after the power play by Wanindu Hasaranga, but Hassan continued to take the innings forward with Towhid Hridoy playing the anchor at the other end. The partnership of 54 threatened to take the game away until Hasaranga got the prized wicket of Hassan, who was dismissed after a well-made 61 off 44 deliveries. However, Towhid Hridoy and Shamim Hossain brought the game back under the control of the Tigers. With the equation down to 12 off 12, it looked like Bangladesh's game until the Lankans managed to get some wickets at the backend to and brought it down to the last over. Dasun Shanaka bowled the last over with five runs to defend. Though the game seemd to be over after jaker Ali struck the first ball for a boundary, Shanaka gave the Lankans a sliver of hope with a couple of wickets. However his efforts went in vain as Shamim won the game with a tight single as they completed the chase with one ball to spare.
