Keshav Maharaj missed South Africa’s first T20I against England in Cardiff on Thursday with a groin strain. The left-arm spinner was set to feature in the eleven, but was injured while warming up and was replaced by pacer Corbin Bosch, who picked up two wickets in their 14-run win.

‌Keshav Maharaj joined South Africa’s long list of injury woes after missing the first T20I against England at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday. The left-arm spinner was all set to feature in the playing eleven after making a comeback to the T20I squad but strained his groin while warming up ahead of the game.

As a result, the Proteas, as admitted by captain Aiden Markram, were forced to replace the veteran spinner with pacer Corbin Bosch. However, Bosch made an impact in the rain-shortened game picking up two wickets for 20 runs in his two overs during the Proteas’ 14-run win via DLS method.

Maharaj joined pacer Lungi Ngidi and David Miller, who both were ruled out of the T20 leg of the England tour. Ngidi, who returned home after picking up a hamstring strain on Wednesday, now has a race against time to be fit and ready for the Test series against Pakistan.

The pacer was replaced by left-arm quick Nandre Burger in the South African squad, while no replacement has been named for Miller. The southpaw was withdrawn from the team before the start of the three-match T20I series after suffering a hamstring strain while playing in The Hundred.

After pocketing the ODI series against the hosts, South Africa lead the T20I leg 1-0 with the second and third game set to be played in Manchester and Nottingham on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
