Dewald Brevis became the costliest player ever in the history of SA20 after being signed by Pretoria Capitals for R16.5 million in the auction. The young South African batter went past Aiden Markram, who was acquired by the Durban’s Super Giants for R14 million in the earlier round.

‌Dewald Brevis broke the bank during the SA20 auction as he was signed by Pretoria Capitals for a record fee of R16.5 million (INR 8.31 crore approx). Pretoria were involved in an intense bidding war with Joburg Super Kings before finally acquiring the young batter’s signature.

Brevis became only the second player to go past the R10 million mark as he went past Aiden Markram, who was signed by the Durban’s Super Giants for R14 million in the earlier round. The South Africa T20I captain was also hotly pursued by Pretoria Capitals before Super Giants’ bid proved better than Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s Right to Match card.

Brevis has been in sublime form in T20s since appearing for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League 2025 season as a replacement player. He scored 225 runs in six matches for CSK, including two fifties, at an average of 37.50 and an impressive strike rate of 180.00.

He carried that form into the T20Is as well, finishing as South Africa’s highest run getter with 133 runs in the Zimbabwe T20 Tri-Series. The young batter then went on to score his first T20I century, the second fastest by a Protean batter, against Australia in the second game of the three-match series.

His unbeaten 125 in that game was also the highest individual score by a South African batter in the shortest format. He also scored a half-century in the last game to finish as the highest run-getter with 180 runs at an astonishing average of 90.00 and a strike rate of 204.54.

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder, Gerald Coetzee, and Nandre Burger were the next costliest signings at R9, R7.4, and R6.3 million, respectively. The fourth season of the SA20 is set to start on December 26, with defending champion MI Cape Town taking on DSG.
