Washington Freedom won their fifth consecutive match in the Major League Cricket 2025 season with a five-wicket win over Los Angeles Knight Riders in a nail-biting finish at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on Friday.
Batting first, LAKR made a formidable 213/4 with opener Andre Fletcher smashing six sixes and seven fours in his 60-ball 104 while Ian Holland was the pick among the WSF bowlers with a spell of 2/25. In reply, WSF successfully chased down the target, albeit after facing some hiccups, off the last ball of the innings. Mitchell Owen starred with the bat with a quickfire 43 off 16 balls, including four sixes and three fours while skipper Glenn Maxwell made 42 off 23 balls.
But the result could have gone down a different route had it not been for LAKR skipper Jason Holder’s drop off the very last ball of the match. With only seven needed off the last over, Andre Russell started off with a wide and a four before bringing the equation down to one off the last ball.
The all-rounder bowled a low full toss with Glenn Phillips looking to go over Holder stationed at mid-on with a fierce hit. His height allowed him to reach the ball on the jump but he could not hold on to it pushing the ball up. He could not latch on even in the second attempt as the ball ricocheted off his left hand and the batter quickly completed a run.
Russell and the entire fielding unit were heartbroken as ecstasy turned to despair in a matter of seconds. The bowler lay down on the pitch before being lifted by his teammates as Holder shook his head while walking back amid consolations from teammates. However, it was all smiles in the WSF dugout with head coach Ricky Ponting wearing a relieved smile while Rachin Ravindra could not believe what unfolded as he stood with his hands on his face.
So near, yet so far!
You can't ask for a better ending ‼️ Tied at the over's end, the fate of this game hung in the balance on just ONE ball! ⚔️🏏🦅
