Trent Boult played an all-round role to power MI New York into the second qualifier of the Major League Cricket 2025 season. The Kiwi pacer picked up two wickets before being an unlikely hero with the bat as MI NY beat San Francisco Unicorns by two wickets in the Eliminator in Dallas.

‌Trent Boult’s heroics with ball and bat powered MI New York past San Francisco Unicorns into the second qualifier of the Major League Cricket 2025 campaign. Boult came up with an impressive spell of 2/19 in four overs and also played an unbeaten cameo with the bat as MI NY beat SFU by two wickets in the Eliminator contest in Dallas.

The left-arm pacer picked up a wicket each in his second and third overs after skipper Nicholas Pooran opted to bowl first at the Grand Prairie Stadium. He dismissed countryman Tim Seifert and Jake Fraser-McGurk, who were both caught behind, as SFU slipped to 16/5 within the fifth over. However, the Australian duo of Cooper Connolly (23) and Xavier Bartlett ensured that SFU got to a respectable score at the end of their batting innings. Bartlett hit four sixes and two fours in his 24-ball 44 to guide his side to 131 before being bowled out in the last over. Apart from Boult, medium-pacer Rushil Ugarkar picked up 3/19 while left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige had two wickets against his name.

Chasing a modest total, the MI NY openers Monank Patel (33) and Quinton de Kock (33) started cautiously to help the side to 37/0 at the end of the powerplay. But they endured a dramatic collapse, slipping from 81/2 to 108/8 in the space of 27 balls. But Boult saved MI NY’s blues with his entertaining cameo of 22 off 13 balls while also adding an unbroken stand of 24 runs off 16 balls with Kenjige for the ninth wicket. His two consecutive sixes off Hassan Khan in the penultimate over sealed the deal as they completed the chase with three balls to spare. Left-arm spinner Hassan Khan was the pick among the SFU bowlers with an impressive spell of 4/30 in four overs, while skipper Matthew Short took three wickets with his off-spin.

MI NY will now face Texas Super Kings in the second qualifier of MLC 2025 to be played at the same venue on Saturday.
