According to a Cricbuzz report, Ravichandran Ashwin is set to depart Chennai Super Kings ahead of next year's Indian Premier League and has forsaken his Director role at their academy to avoid conflict of interest. The veteran off-spinner was bought for INR 9.75 crore in the mega auction last year.

Ravichandran Ashwin, the fifth highest wicket-taker in IPL history, is reportedly looking for new pastures for the tournament's 19th season as teams look to prepare their retention lists ahead of the mini-auction in a few months' time. The 38-year-old made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings in 2009 and spent six years at the franchise, winning back-to-back titles as well as two Champions Leagues with the Yellove Army before the team's suspension forced his move to the Rising Pune Supergiants. Ashwin has since represented Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals respectively, before CSK paved the way for a grand homecoming in 2024 by acquiring the off-spinner's services for INR 9.75 crore at the mega auction.

The report fails to provide any specific reasons behind the move, albeit it comes as little surprise given the season Ashwin had. The offie played just nine games, scalping seven wickets and for the first time in his IPL career conceded runs at over nine. Already retired from all forms of international cricket and bearing a history of gruesome injuries, Ashwin's return to CSK was seen as the perfect end to a glittering career boasting 187 wickets -- three of which came in the triumphant 2011 final where he opened the bowling and dispatched Orange Cap holder Chris Gayle for a bronze duck. Ashwin's appointment as Director of Operations at CSK's Academy in 2024 only furthered the narrative, given it would allow a smooth transition from playing to a coaching or mentorship role, but plans have gone awry since.

Ashwin's potential departure could also be a consequence of Sanju Samson's reported rift with Rajasthan Royals and a looming trade to CSK. The Whistle Podu clan are in need of a wicket-keeper batter with MS Dhoni's retirement imminent and Sanju's track record makes him a premium pick both for his playing skills as well as his leadership experience. The realease of Ashwin would create significant room in the franchise's salary cap, which could facilitate a trade with Rajasthan or give CSK the leverage to pick Sanju up at the mini-auction.
