Hitting a six off an unconventional shot might be challenging enough, but not for Somerset batter Thomas Rew, as he showed during the One Day Cup game against Middlesex on Wednesday. He came up with an audacious reverse sweep to send the ball flying past the point boundary amid stunned supporters.

‌Somerset started their One Day Cup 2025 campaign with a six-wicket win over Middlesex in Radlett on Wednesday. The Rew brothers, James and Thomas, made light work of the chase to power their side to 293/4 with 15 balls to spare. Captain James remained unbeaten with a 90-ball 106, including  15 fours, while younger brother Thomas hit three fours and three sixes during his knock of 51.

Earlier in the game, medium pacer Jake Ball and left-arm spinner Jack Leach picked up three-wicket hauls to restrict Middlesex to 289/7, with Joshua De Caires (71) and Jack Davies (64) scoring contrasting half-centuries.

The Rew brothers stole the limelight as they batted together to build a match-winning partnership of 107 for the fourth wicket. During the stand, Thomas came up with a stunning shot off spinner De Caires during the 38th over to stun the audience as well as the cricketing world.

Just as the ball left the off-spinner’s hand, the young batter shifted stance to send the ball over the boundary ropes. He countered the angle of the bowler, who was coming from around the wicket, with the reverse sweep as the ball flew after pitching on a length on middle and leg stump.

The shot mirrored the conventional sweep of a left-handed batter, with the batter taking advantage of the fielders placed inside the circle. The onlookers, including the bowler, were shocked as Thomas pulled off the shot, quite convincingly, without breaking much sweat.

What was that!
