England batter Joe Root has revealed that Chris Woakes will be available to bat if the team requires him to on Day 5 of the fifth Test against India, at The Oval. Woakes had initially been stated to play no further part after injuring his shoulder while fielding but has since had some throwdowns.
The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy is set for a dramatic finish on Day 5 with England requiring 35 runs to win while India are four wickets away from levelling the series 2-2. The visitors were initially expected to require just three scalps to seal the win after Chris Woakes had severely injured his shoulder while fielding on the opening day of the encounter, but the dire situation of the match has forced England's hand to play all their cards if required.
"He's all-in, like the rest of us. It's been that kind of series, where guys have had to put bodies on the line. Hopefully, it doesn't get to that. But he had some throwdowns in here (the indoor school) at one point, and he's ready if needed… He's desperate to do what it takes," former skipper Joe Root revealed at the end of Day 4.
Woakes dislocated his left shoulder after slipping on the damp Oval outfielder and did not come out to bat in England's first innings, where the hosts took a 23-run lead. The all-rounder's services seemed dispensable during the chase as well when Root and Harry Brook scored tons each in a 195-run fourth wicket stand, but neither could take the side across the line to leave two results possible. Nevertheless, Root remained confident of Woakes securing the win if required, citing the example of Rishabh Pant at Old Trafford when the wicket-keeper batter returned to the crease after retiring hurt on 37 to notch a half-century.
"It just shows the character and the person that he's willing to put his body on the line like that for England, and hopefully - well, hopefully he doesn't have to, but if it does come to that - get us across the line and win us an incredible series," Root concluded.
