In the final session, Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra continued New Zealand's progress, but Williamson’s promising innings was cut short by a spectacular catch from Kusal Mendis.

On the fourth ball of the 53rd over, captain Dhananjaya de Silva delivered a fuller ball on the pads. As the ball stayed low, Williamson advanced and attempted to turn it around the corner. Unfortunately, the ball took the leading edge and looped up on the offside. Kusal Mendis, alert and quick, dived forward from the silly point region to take a stunning catch. His remarkable effort to dismiss the well-set Williamson was celebrated by his teammates and also drew praise from the cricketing world on social media.
