BGT | Explaining Travis Head’s ‘finger’ celebration following Rishabh Pant’s wicket

Celebrations after wickets have become the norm in modern day cricket these days with players finding new and unique ways to celebrate scalps. However, when Travis Head dismissed Rishabh Pant in the ongoing Boxing Day Test, most cricket fans felt offended by the gesture which looked offensive.

However, it turns out the celebration has a history as well. In a match against Sri Lanka in 2022, Travis Head played an integral part in Australia winning by 10 wickets at Galle. However, it was not with the bat. Bowling in the second innings of the game, Head bowled a total of 17 deliveries conceding 10 runs. What was impressive though was that those deliveries yielded Australia wickets of Dhananjaya de Silva, Dinesh Chandimal, Jeffrey Vandersay, and Lasith Embuldeniya.

Following the match, Head put up a story on Instagram with his finger in a glass of ice. He captioned the story, “Had to put the digit on ice.” Australia’s Channel 7 were quick to identify the history behind the celebration before announcing it on the air. The celebration appears to be similar to a shooter holstering his weapon following a job well done.

After being brought onto bowl after Tea, he managed to get his side the wicket they were looking for. And with the wicket of Pant on his resume, he brought out his handy celebration.
