VIDEO | Virat Kohli overrules “unconvinced” MS Dhoni to cost India a review

In his home city, MS Dhoni enjoys a cult status that very few get when they go back to their home town. In what could possibly be the last international game for MS Dhoni in Ranchi, his uncertainty to identify the right height cost India the only review available for them in the innings.

Australia had started their innings nicely and by taking the flatness of the surface to the account, Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch played without any fear. Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah also found to extract any sort of movement off the surface which could have been the calling card inside the powerplay, and India seemed to have been under pressure. However, it was not that they didn’t create any chances initially.

On the penultimate ball of the second over, Jasprit Bumrah struck to his plans of bowling into Finch and when the ball jagged into him at 141.5kph, the Aussie failed to move his legs properly, only to be struck on pads in front of the wicket. Had he moved his feet after the ball was pitched, it could have been flicked to mid-wicket for four, but Finch’s doubts in his head resulted in the ball hitting him in front.

Bumrah was very loud in his appeal, but the umpire turned that down thinking it might have been going above the stumps. Kohli was very animated in his discussion with Bumrah and then asked MS Dhoni for his suggestion. As Cricbuzz noted in their commentary, Dhoni was not convinced about it. However, sensing the opportunity, Kohli decided to go upstairs anyway. The replays then suggested that the ball had missed the middle-stump by a couple of inches due to the bounce available on it.

“MSD wasn't convinced. As it turns out, the DRS specialist is right. No bat involved and HawkEye shows it going over the sticks. Review gone so early in the innings,” Cricbuzz said in their Text commentary.
