BCCI has no right to cancel Mohammed Shami's contract, asserts former BCCI legal advisor

Usha Nath Bandyopadhyay, who has served as the Principal Legal Advisor of the BCCI earlier, has called the board’s decision to delay Mohammed Shami's contract as "illegal and wrong". Shami is currently under investigation for an attempt to murder and other allegations made by his wife, Hasin Jahan.

After Mohammed Shami's wife made a public allegation that the Indian pacer had attempted to kill her, the Indian cricket board has put his contract on hold till a final verdict was reached. However, at the time, Jahan had not made a formal complaint, and that made many people question the legality of the BCCI’s decision.

Now Bandyopadhyay, who was formerly hired by the BCCI as a Principal Legal Advisor, said that the BCCI did not have the right to cancel the Indian player’s contract on the basis of an allegation or even “on the basis of a complaint filed by his wife”.

"The selection (of a player) is done on the basis of merit and I have nothing to say if a player's contract is cancelled on the basis of that,” Bandyopadhyay said, reported NDTV.

"If the contract is cancelled on the basis of a complaint by his wife, it would be illegal and wrong. BCCI has no right to cancel the contract on the basis of a complaint filed by his wife."
