Sri Lanka’s misery after losing the ODI series against India was further compounded by a hair line fracture to Dinesh Chandimal's thumb which has ruled him out of the remainder of the series. Following a whitewash in the Test series, the home side would hope to avoid another drubbing in the ODI's.

Sri Lanka’s injury prone series against India continued as their Test skipper Dinesh Chandimal suffered a hairline fracture on his right thumb and will miss rest of the series. The injury took place when Chandimal was batting on 14 in the third ODI as a Hardik Pandya delivery hit him on his right thumb. He needed immediate medical attention before eventually being clean bowled for 36 by Pandya himself.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed the news through a media release which read, "SLC confirms that Test captain Dinesh Chandimal will be out of action for the rest of the series after sustaining a hairline fracture to his right thumb. We will have a better idea of timeline of his recovery after consulting a specialist in Colombo tomorrow."

After being excluded from the original ODI squad, Chandimal was recalled to the side along with Lahiru Thirimanne as the home side lost Upul Tharanga and Danushka Gunathilaka for two games. While Gunathilaka is still recovering from a shoulder injury, Tharanga is serving a two-game suspension for slow over rate in the second ODI of the five-match series in Pellelelle.

The ongoing series had been quite an unfortunate one for the right-handed batsman as he had missed the first Test against India at Galle after being hospitalized with pneumonia. Moreover, he couldn’t perform well upon his return to the side for the second Test and has struggled for form right through.

Despite this, his absence from the original ODI squad announced to face India was met with a lot of speculation in Sri Lanka as he is the Test skipper, while the Sri Lankan cricket board decided to name Upul Tharanga as the skipper following Angelo Mathews’ decision to step down from the post. Further, there have also been reports of a disagreement between Asanka Gurusinha and Sanath Jayasuriya over Chandimal’s ability to lead the side.

Sri Lanka have already conceded the five match ODI series by losing the first three games rather tamely which has caused massive unrest among the home fans. Given this scenario, the Lankan lions would be hoping to prevent further humiliation in the remaining two ODIs of the series.
