Former Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan has been named the captain of Delhi Daredevils for the coming season of the IPL.The left-armer’s captaincy comes as part of a major overhaul in the Delhi camp, which were captained by South African all-rounder JP Duminy in the last edition of the IPL.

After wholesale changes before and at the auctions, Delhi Daredevils have decided to entrust Zaheer Khan with the role of captaincy for IPL 9. The GMR group-owned franchise will be coached by former India captain Rahul Dravid, after the 43-year old led the India Under-19 side to the finals of the U-19 world cup, losing to West Indies at the final hurdle.

Speaking about the appointment, Dravid, who was a teammate of Zaheer for the longest time, explained the decision.

“Zaheer has been a leader for a very long time. Anyone who has followed Indian cricket will know the impact Zak has had. He has always proven himself to be one of the leaders. Zak has a big personality, but it is the steel, focus and drive behind the outward confidence which I think he will bring to the captaincy and that I am sure will inspire the rest of the team. He has the respect of the dressing room and the franchise is proud to have him as our captain. I would like to congratulate him on the appointment and wish him, and the rest of the squad all the very best."

Zaheer, who retired from international career last year, was glad to assume the role.

“It is a huge honour to captain Delhi Daredevils. To get this responsibility is a way for me to give back to the game. I firmly believe that with the players currently involved we have the makings of a very good side, a young side that can surprise people. The potential of this group of players is immense and it is now up to us as players to turn that potential into consistent performances,” said the left-armer.

Zak, who has 82 wickets in 77 matches in his IPL career, will be leading a side filled with youngsters. His IPL economy is a respectable 7.53, having played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians before making the move to Delhi Daredevils.

Delhi Daredevils will kick-start their campaign on April 10, when they take on the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.
