On the last day of 2015, BCCI confirmed the release of several players including stars like Yuvraj Singh, Dale Steyn, and Ishant Sharma from their respective franchises. All the franchises have together retained 101 players including 37 overseas players.

2011 World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh, bought for the highest price at 14 crores last season, was released by Delhi Daredevils, who were expecting to lift themselves up with the all-rounder's arrival. The team has been languishing at the bottom of the league for two consecutive seasons – they were 7th in 2015 and 8th in 2014. Yuvraj played 14 matches last season and scored 248 runs at an average of 19.07, and his bowling was not remarkable either as he took a single wicket the whole season. Interestingly, the decision comes days after his inclusion into the Indian T20 squad for the Tour Down Under.

Daredevils skipper Angelo Mathews was also shown the door along with eight more members.

Royal Challengers Bangalore released the most number of players (14) with Darren Sammy, Dinesh Karthik and Rille Rossouw leading the pack out. The team retained Indian Test captain Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Mitchell Starc and Chris Gayle along with several more players.

Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad released South African pace spearhead Dale Steyn from their lines. The South African was in poor form last season and managed to pick up only three wickets at an average of 56.66. The pacer also ended up playing only six matches, owing to an injury. Ishant Sharma, Kevin Pietersen and Praveen Kumar were also let go along with five others by the Hyderabad team.

Kings XI Punjab released Virender Sehwag and George Bailey, in an attempt to change their fortunes, while retaining Wriddhiman Saha, Mitchell Johnson and Glen Maxwell. The Punjab franchise released six other players as well.

Meanwhile. Mumbai Indian's released Austrailian pacers Ben Hilfenhaus and Josh Hazelwood and eight others. The Kolkata franchise also released ten players from their team, including Azhar Mahmood and Patrick Cummins.
