It was a glorious finish to an impressive display for local boy Sourabh Verma who clinched the men's singles title be defeating Singapore's Loh Kean Yew in a thrilling finale at the Hyderabad Open on Sunday. The 26-year-old Indian got off to a commanding start by winning the opening game by 21-13 margin. However, the Singaporean fought back in the second game to put the pressure back on Verma by beating him with 14-21 scoreline.
Verma, who is coached by Pullela Gopichand, kept his cool to win the final game by 21-16 margin in a match that lasted 52 minutes and ultimately lift the Hyderabad Open title.
“Any win at this level is great and I am glad that I have played really well in this tournament and hope to keep going,” the champion told PTI post the win.
Meanwhile, Indian women's doubles duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy had to settle for the runners-up medal after they suffered a defeat in the final to South Korea's Baek Ha Na and Jung Kyung Eun. The Indians were swept aside in straight sets by a scoreline of 25-17, 25-17 in the women's doubles final.
